Staff Notes: Known as kalendariyo halila, halila, or simply as kalendariyo, these were Ladino pocket calendars for the Jewish years. When published in the US, they often included the Gregorian year as well. American kalendariyos often included ads for various business, especially in New York and Seattle -- cities with major Sephardic and Ladino-speaking populations in the early twentieth century. These pocket calendars originated in Ottoman Salonica and were published throughout the late nineteeth and early twentieth centuries.
